Bug of the Week Academy Awards

With the Film Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences having just completed its 78’th Annual Award Ceremony, it seemed only fitting to recognize the accomplishments of the great cast of bugs we visited during the inaugural year of “Bug of the Week”. It really has been a fantastic year for insects. As members of the bug of the week academy, this is your chance to vote for some of your favorites. Three categories of insects will be recognized this year. They are Most Audacious Predator, Most Beautiful Bug, and Best Achievement in Sound Making.

The nominees for each category are:

Most Audacious Predator:

Arilus cristatus as Assassi for her role as the caterpillar - sucking wheel bug in “It’s the Wheel Thing”

Tenodera aridifolia sinensis as Manti for her role as the femme fatale in the “Chinese Praying Mantid”

Harmonia axyridis as the aphid - munching lady beetle in “She’s a lady or is she?”

Most Beautiful Bug:

Danaus plexippus as the monarch in “The Royals are in the House”

Chrysoperla as the beautiful green lacewing in “The Lion in My Garden”

Chrysocus auratus the beautiful but deadly dogbane beetle in “Gold in the Meadow”

Best Achievement in Sound Making:

Gryllus pennsylvanicus for his mellow love song in “The troubadour downstairs”

Tibicen for his heavy metal sounds in “Dog days and their cicadas”

Scudderia curvicauda and his reggae beat in “Katydid?”
